In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day 2015, Long Branch Plantation will host a film screening and discussion of The Loving Story on Monday, January 19, 2015 from 1pm - 4pm.
The Loving Story documents the lives of Mildred and Richard Loving, who were arrested in Virginia in July 1958 for violating a state law that banned interracial marriages. The resulting court case, Loving v Virginia, which had banned the Loving's from the state for 25 years, was overturned in a landmark decision by the US Supreme Court in 1967. The film follows this story and includes rarely seen interviews and photographs. Following the film, there will be a guided discussion led by members of the Long Branch staff. This program is free of charge and takes place as part of the National Endowment for the Humanities 'Created Equal' series, which can be viewed online at createdequal.neh.gov.
